Cleverbridge now supports WeChat Pay. Here’s how it works and where it fits alongside Alipay.
In China, checkout starts with a phone. Buyers expect to scan a QR code and confirm the payment in a wallet app, and for most of them, that app is Alipay or WeChat Pay. Not every buyer uses both, though. Offer only one, and a meaningful share of customers won’t find their preferred payment method at checkout.
Between them, the two wallets cover almost the entire market: Alipay and WeChat Pay held an estimated 54% and 42% of China's mobile payments market, respectively, in 2024.
For global software, SaaS, and digital goods businesses, offering familiar local payment methods can help reduce checkout friction and reach customers who might otherwise hesitate to complete a purchase. When buyers can pay using an app they already use every day, the experience becomes more familiar and convenient.
That's why we're expanding our local payment capabilities in China with the introduction of WeChat Pay, complementing our existing Alipay support and strengthening Cleverbridge's coverage of China's two leading digital wallets.
WeChat Pay is a digital wallet developed by Tencent and built directly into WeChat (known as Weixin in China), one of China's leading super apps. What started as a messaging and social networking platform has evolved into a broader digital ecosystem connecting communication, content, and commerce.
That ecosystem operates at massive scale: Weixin and WeChat had a combined 1.4 billion monthly active users as of June 2026.
Customers can link a bank account or card to their WeChat profile and use their wallet balance or linked payment methods to pay across websites and apps without needing to enter card details directly at checkout.
For online purchases, the process is straightforward: customers select WeChat Pay, scan a QR code using the WeChat app, and authorize the payment directly within the app using a PIN or biometric authentication. Paying becomes just one more action inside an app they already know and trust, providing customers with a fast, familiar, and secure checkout experience.
China’s shift to digital wallets is close to complete, both online and in stores.
According to Worldpay's Global Payments Report 2026, digital wallets accounted for 87% of China's in-store transaction value and 89% of ecommerce transaction value in 2025, compared with 33% and 56% globally, respectively.
For businesses selling software and digital products, this creates an important distinction: a checkout primarily optimized for international card payments may not fully reflect the local payment preferences of customers in China, where digital wallets dominate everyday transactions. Customers accustomed to paying with a wallet they already use may face additional friction or abandon their purchase altogether when that option is unavailable at checkout.
While both WeChat Pay and Alipay offer similar payment functionality, their ecosystems have different origins. Alipay grew alongside China's ecommerce industry. WeChat Pay grew out of WeChat itself: users send friends money in digital red envelopes, and pay for food delivery or rides through Mini Programs inside the app. Both have become deeply embedded in how Chinese consumers transact, with many customers using both rather than relying exclusively on one provider.
WeChat Pay vs. Alipay via Cleverbridge
| Payment method | Best fit | Checkout experience | Recurring payments |
| WeChat Pay | Buyers who pay through WeChat day to day, including desktop purchases completed on a phone | Customer scans a QR code with the WeChat app and authorizes payment (30-minute window) | Subscriptions supported, but customers pay each renewal manually; no automatic renewals |
| Alipay | Buyers who already shop and pay online with Alipay | Customer scans a QR code with the Alipay app and authorizes payment | Subscriptions supported, but customers pay each renewal manually; no automatic renewals |
For global digital businesses, offering WeChat Pay aligns the checkout experience with how customers in China prefer to pay, providing several potential benefits:
Reduced checkout friction and higher conversion potential. Many software purchases happen in a desktop browser, but in China, the wallet lives on the phone. WeChat Pay connects the two: customers scan a QR code at checkout and confirm the payment in the WeChat app. A familiar, fast flow like this can reduce checkout abandonment and help improve conversion rates.
A foreign purchase that feels local. WeChat Pay, through Cleverbridge, runs in Chinese yuan, so customers see and pay the price in their own currency. They approve the payment in an app they already control, without handing card details to an unfamiliar international website.
Less payment complexity. With Cleverbridge handling merchant of record services, businesses can offer WeChat Pay alongside Alipay without having to navigate China's payment landscape or manage local integrations and processing themselves. That frees them to focus on business growth instead of payment operations.
These benefits are particularly relevant for businesses selling software licenses, SaaS products, and digital goods, where customers often complete purchases independently and the checkout experience plays a critical role in conversion.
China's payment landscape is fundamentally different from many other global markets. Digital wallets dominate online commerce, and WeChat Pay has established itself as the country's second-largest mobile payment method.
For software and digital businesses, adapting to these local preferences is an important part of expanding successfully into the Chinese market. Customers should be able to pay using methods they already know and trust, helping reduce unnecessary checkout friction and potential purchase abandonment.
With WeChat Pay now supported alongside Alipay, Cleverbridge covers China's two dominant mobile payment ecosystems, expanding the payment choices available to Chinese customers and helping our clients build a stronger foundation for growth in one of the world's largest digital economies.

Who can pay with WeChat Pay through Cleverbridge?
WeChat Pay is available to customers in China paying in Chinese yuan (CNY) at checkout.

What happens if a customer doesn’t finish paying?
